About

Hi, I'm Karolína.

Where I come from

I was supposed to be an economist. At University of Toronto, I studied financial markets, economic policy and advanced mathematics. Then, by complete accident, I stumbled upon courses about machine learning and data analysis, using Python to model the real world. But what caught my eye wasn’t the end result, it was the code that was used to achieve it.

At some point I decided I wanted to explore it further, to build the tools and understand the code that lay behind the modelling reports. So after completing my degree and returning to the Czech Republic, I enrolled in Software Engineering.

I still think like an economist: a product is meant to be built for users to use, not for developers’ enjoyment. But now I can be on both sides - the one to analyze the solution and its return for the client, as well as actually making it myself.

How I work

  • Business first, backlog second. When I join a project, I want to understand the client’s business and their users before I touch a ticket. Being a partner means asking “should we build this?” as well as “how?”
  • Logic once, in the shared module. A new feature starts in shared Kotlin Multiplatform code: data, business rules, ViewModels. The iOS and Android UIs come last and stay fully native.
  • AI does the typing, I own the result. AI has become such a big part of my workflow that I rarely write a line of code myself. Working in loops, setting guardrails, writing rules and skills - that all enables me to trust the AI-generated code. My role has shifted since I first started writing software - but that means I can focus on stuff like scalability, design system, code quality, monitoring, and product ownership.

What I’m into now

  • Getting deeper into Android and other technologies. AI makes it so much easier to delve into other, less familiar tech stacks.
  • Refining my AI-driven development workflow, and sharing it. It’s a never-ending process, and what I learn from my mistakes and wins, I like to share.
  • Looking for impact. Building something random can be fun, but only a truly meaningful product makes my daily work fulfilling. Right now, I want to go back to my roots a little, and explore how I can combine my previous field of finance with my technical software engineering skills.

Outside work

I compensate for my desk-sitting with movement. It can be the gym, tennis, any ball game, mountaineering, cycling, running, or simply playing with my dog. What can I say: being hybrid is a trend now, but for me it’s been a lifestyle since I was a kid.
